Medical Volunteer Trip to Ghana

In July 2013 I will be travelling to Ghana, Africa to work as a medical volunteer for four weeks. I am raising money to cover my flights and to purchase much needed medical supplies to donate to the clinics and hospital where I will be working.

I will be working in rural hospitals and health clinics, where trained staff are desperately needed and medical supplies are limited beyond belief. Health care in Ghana defies the imagination of most Australians, with some Ghanian’s having never seen a doctor in their lifetime. Diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis are epidemic and go largely untreated and things like pain relief or anaesthetics are used in only the most serious cases and then sparingly.

Only about 20% of the African population have real access to some form of primary care and live within a few hours walk of a health care facility. Health care facilities are extremely limited in the major cities and completely inadequate outside of the cities. Each day people are suffering and dying from the lack of sufficient health facilities, insufficient equipment and shortages of medical supplies.
